May 18, 2003 Pages A1 and C6 of the April 22, 2003 new york times have on them an article about spam, and spam blocking. One paragraph is about whitelisting. "Another approach to limiting spam, which is favored by big marketers, is to create a so-called white list of approved senders, but this raises the question of who will compile such a list. ... Users and internet service providers would then decide what sort of mail they choose to accept." The paragraph is promising a proposal which was to be put forth the following day by an unnamed consortium of companies who send mail on behalf of large corporations. I don't know anything about this proposal at this time. TipJar LLC, through the RAPNAP database project, has taken it upon itself to be a central list of genuine senders. Also see the OMX proposal (OMX.txt, in this directory).
